Prep Choir shines

Says choir director Caroline Heo, “All the students taking part are very committed, responsible and adventurous.”
The Prep Choir for the 2024–25 academic year consists of 33 students in Years 6 and 7. They meet early every Friday morning to rehearse and share their passion for singing.

The first term passed quickly. With fewer than 15 rehearsals, the choir managed to prepare for and perform at various events, including the Remembrance Day Assembly, Middle Assembly, Festival of Lights, and the Prep Winter Concert. The Festival of Lights was particularly special, as the students had the opportunity to work with Upper School a cappella choir the Blue Notes, and sing in beautiful harmony.

The second term remains lively. The choir recently performed at the Prep’s Jazz Café, and is currently preparing for the Conference of Independent Schools Music Festival (CISMF) and the Spring Concert, among other upcoming performances. CISMF participation is a great honour and will be especially rewarding, with 50  independent schools across Ontario coming together to put on a musical showcase at Roy Thomson Hall.

Throughout the year the choir explores various genres of choral music, from classical to contemporary. For the Festival of Lights, the repertoire included “Hot Chocolate,” a Latin salsa-style song, and “December in My Hometown,” a warm winter ballad. Students were also excited to perform the jazzy version of “My Favourite Things” from The Sound of Music, as well as “Almost Like Being in Love,” an upbeat and positive show tune from Lerner and Loewe's Brigadoon, at the Jazz Café.

“Being part of the choir is an unforgettable school experience,” Heo says. “Although it’s challenging to fit rehearsals into their busy schedules, these 33 singers have demonstrated punctuality and dedication. They learn to be respectful, supportive of one another, and to treat this as an ongoing team-building and collaborative opportunity.”
